S/S 2013 Trend: White Out

This Spring/Summer the colour everyone is going to be talking about is white. White is the new black, and that means everything! From footwear to beauty trends everything is going to be a white-out. It often appears on the Spring/ Summer catwalks and this year they are welcoming the new, ‘super whites’, which takes the neutral colour palette to a whole new level.

Although white has some practicality issues, it is all or nothing this summer so prepare to lay off the coffee for the day! Especially if your prone to accidents. You don’t have to be a brave soul to conquer this look just make sure your all in white and you will have ticked off one of this seasons hottest trends.

Designers taking this trend to the catwalks include Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Missoni, Alexander Wang and Roberto Cavalli, all through their own interpretations. Missoni opts for sheer barely there materials with a contrast patent leather open-toed sandal, Alexander Wang oozes slight sex appeal with clean cut-out pieces and strong linear shapes. Whilst Cavalli creates delicate detailing through laser-cut denim which create a clean rock ‘n’ roll vibe.

Make the transfer from winter to summer with the key item on our list, the white trench coat, build up the look with textured layers which create dimensions and depth. Build on delicate knits and wool tailoring to ease the transition, eventually you will be wearing barely there fabrics and strong cut-out pieces. To avoid looking washed-out add a hint of colour through accessories and under layers try, fresh mint, sky blue and blush colour palettes which can be implemented through small doses to keep the look minimal and fresh.

When creating this look it is important to think about what you want to perceive, white can act as a strong canvas for many different moods, if you thought you could never pull it off here’s a few tips on how to do it.

Layer up light, sheer fabrics to create a feminine, sultry vibe. By teaming sheer lace tunics with different textures such as heavy embroidery and feathers can achieve an utterly angelic look. To add sex appeal follow in the footsteps of Alexander Wang and double up on cut-out pieces but keep the outfit understated to avoid look sleazy and cheap.

Sharp angles and bold shapes create a clinical, minimal effect. Team laser cut nylon and a tailored suit with patent stilettos and you can achieve instant chic. To create an everyday look try a clean cut blouse with straight cut trousers but keep accessories to a minimum.

For an evening look, try some of spring/summer beauty trends and opt for minimal make-up but add a strong red lip and team with a sleek polka-straight pony, you will be sure to achieve the instant wow factor at any party.

So dare to bare this summer and go all or nothing! It’s time to be brave and step out of the winter blues with an almighty bang.
